You know loving yourself is a key to happiness, right? Maybe you already completely embrace who you are, or maybe you’re still struggling to get there. Either way, asking yourself this one question could have a huge impact on your life and even the success of your business.

What do you deserve?

Asking yourself what you deserve is a deep question. Most of us probably don’t really think about it, especially in regard to the big picture of how we live, how we behave, what we accept and how we treat ourselves.

Now this question is not about deserving decent service at a restaurant. Go deeper; what do you really deserve in your life?

A good friend recently presented this question to me. I had never really thought about it , in these terms, but I loved the question instantly. I immediately began rattling off what I believe I deserve and as I was verbalizing that for the first time, I realized that this is the code by which I live. These standards direct the decisions I make, what and whom I accept into my life and how I run my business.

I encourage you to spend some quiet time reflecting on what YOU deserve. Write down your answers. At first glance your list may seem more related to your personal life than to your business. Your answers reflect your VALUES and WHO YOU TRULY ARE AT YOUR CORE. And trust me; when you are clear about that, and make decisions in alignment with what you deserve, you’ll be able to leave behind what’s blocking you and propel your business forward quickly.

Don’t be surprised if you end up discovering a lot of icky stuff during this process. That crummy junk, in the form of unsupportive people and incongruent situations, is probably draining you and holding you back. And the good news is once you understand your personal principles, it won’t be so difficult to get rid of these energy-busters.

To help you get started, I’m sharing my list with you. It has some very strong universal values so if they resonate with you, you’re welcome to use them on your own list.

Here’s What I Deserve

1. I DESERVE RESPECT.

Therefore, I don’t accept any relationships in my life that aren’t respectful. That means clients have to live up to their side of the deal as well. If a client can’t stick to our agreed upon schedule for example, then we’re just not the right fit.

Do you have people in your life that you think are your friends but always make you feel small or break promises? Clients that flake out or business associates that fall short? Those people are certainly not lifting you up. Perhaps it’s time to cut the cord.

2. I DESERVE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.

Everybody doesn’t have to agree with me but the people in my life must appreciate my perspectives, opinions and feelings. I deserve to be heard. So they have to allow me my thoughts and not expect me to agree with them all the time. If a vendor isn’t taking my needs into account, he’s out.

Are you surrounded by people who allow you to speak your mind? Are you staying small for any reason?

3. I DESERVE HAPPINESS.

I bet you knew this one was coming! It took me a long time to figure it out but I got there and now I’m spreading the joy wherever I can. I’m living my dream (the only way to get there!)

Do you believe you deserve to be happy? Are you striving to make your dreams come true? In what areas are you holding back?

4. I DESERVE LOVE.

I’m single right now … but I know I am worthy of, and am, loved by many. I’m blessed to have fantastic and meaningful friendships. Many of my friendships date back more than 20 years, while others are still budding. And I have a cherished and close family that I can rely on when times are tough or just for a laugh. More important, I can’t expect anyone else to love me if I don’t love myself. So I’ve learned to love myself.

How does love fit into your current situation? Do you know that you’re worthy of receiving love? Do the people close to you show their love? Do you love yourself?

5. I DESERVE GOOD HEALTH.

Guess who this one’s for? ME! Since I believe I deserve to be healthy I better be doing everything I can to honor that. I’ve always kept up with my regular doctor checkups, mammograms, dental cleanings, etc. And I try to eat healthy, whole foods but I could do better at that. I’ve also slacked off on my exercise routine so I recently said to myself, “Get it together girl!” I know all of these things are crucial to both my ongoing happiness and the success of my business.

What are you doing to be your healthiest? Exercising? Eating Right? If you consume alcohol are you doing it in moderation? Do you have a spiritual practice? Are you getting the proper physical exams from qualified professionals?

6. I DESERVE PEACE.

My mental health is also very important to me so I’m committed to keeping my daily meditation practice going and to continuing on my personal growth journey. Also, I don’t like drama in my personal or professional life. Sure things happen but I certainly don’t surround myself with people who always have a lot of drama happening. For me, that’s negative energy and it brings me down.

What’s your commitment to personal growth and/or a spiritual life? Where is there unnecessary drama in your life or business? Does your virtual assistant often miss deadlines or forget things? Well that’s definitely some commotion you could probably do without, right?

7. I DESERVE SECURITY.

This principle came to me just before the recent tragedy in Connecticut that has raised the consciousness of the nation, so it has more meaning now than ever. But on a personal level, I certainly won’t put myself in any situation where I feel my safety is being compromised. If I do find myself in that situation I immediately do whatever I can to remove myself from it. These days I also find security in being my own boss. The new reality of today’s economy just doesn’t provide job security from an employer.

Are you making decisions that maintain your safety and security? Are you putting yourself into, or accepting, any threatening relationships or ominous business situations?

8. I DESERVE ABUNDANCE.

I’ve developed the self-worth to know in my heart that I deserve success and abundance. That isn’t the same as greed. Living with an attitude of abundance means I know there’s plenty of the good stuff for everybody. So why shouldn’t I have the big juicy life and thriving business that I dream of? It doesn’t mean I’m living irresponsibly or turning into an in-debt shopaholic. It means I know that I deserve to have all that I desire and that the universe will provide me with what I need, when I need it.

Do you embrace the concept of abundance? Or are you a glass-half-empty person? Are you skimping in your life, selling yourself short and cutting corners in your business?

Now Commit to Living in Alignment with What You Deserve

Now that you have fully identified your personal ethics, show yourself some love and make a commitment to yourself. Make sure what you think, what and whom you accept into your life and business, how you behave and how you treat yourself all support what you deserve. It’s ok to have high standards. Be sure you set and enforce the boundaries necessary to maintain your moral code. Your intuition will let you know when something isn’t right. Then it’s up to you to speak up and stand up for yourself and remember what you deserve.

Let me know WHAT YOU DESERVE! I can’t wait to hear about it.

Courage.

Who is the first person that comes to mind when you hear that word?

I think of a heroic firefighter emerging from a blazing building, carrying a kitten. And a cancer patient, clad in a brightly colored head scarf, patiently receiving chemo. And a pack of frosty mountain climbers crossing an ice gap on the way to the peak of Mount Everest, Neil Armstrong taking the first step on the moon, Rosa Parks not giving up her seat on a bus in Alabama. The list of inspirational pioneers is endless.

But let’s put those tremendous examples aside. What about having the COURAGE to design an exhilarating adventure and make your own dreams come true?

You may be able to acknowledge your deepest desires, whether that’s starting your own business, taking a sabbatical to spend a year traveling the world or relocating to that idyllic house in the country you’ve always dreamed of.

However, it takes a lot of guts to turn our fantasies into reality. In fact, most people don’t ever do it. But let’s get real here. We have two choices. We can either muster up the audacity to live that big juicy life we crave, or we can give into fear and stay in mediocrity.

The only way to be truly happy is to go after exactly what your want. It probably won’t be easy, there will be obstacles, but it’s going to be fun!

Here’s how you can discover the courage to live an “ooh la la” life …

Be Authentic – Know Your True Self.

To know what you want in life you have to know who you really are at the core. What is your essence? Ask yourself the following questions.

What makes you unique?

What makes you special? That’s your calling card. Like my red hair, the gap in my front teeth, my unabashed honesty and straightforward personality.

What are your core personal values?

What’s your personal code? Values guide your decisions and conscious. If you’re not sure what values you cherish, spend some time thinking about what’s always been important to you, what’s important to you now and what you admire in others. Some of my top values are loving-kindness, connection, justice/equality, open-mindedness, abundance, honesty and growth.

What’s your legacy?

A psychic once told me she saw me at the end of my life in a stark white art gallery filled with blank white canvases feeling like I’d accomplished nothing. WHOA! That image was a very vivid wake up call. I must admit at the time I felt like I was going nowhere. I’m grateful I changed course and discovered my passion. My legacy is to improve the world by helping professionistas tap into the power of happiness to be more successful in their lives, businesses and careers. If you’re not sure what your legacy is spend some more time exploring what makes you tick and how you want to help.

Be Daring – Confess Your Unadulterated Ambitions.

Admitting what you really want can be scary. Big changes may be required. People may judge you. But the only way to get there is to acknowledge your aspirations. If you don’t have a clear picture of your passions, try making a vision board.

Be Bold – Believe in Yourself.

Prince Charming is a fairy tale. The only person who can make your dreams come true is YOU. The people who are most successful achieving their goals never doubt that they can pull it off. They see setbacks as learning experiences not failures. They keep their eye on the ball and keep going. You need that kind of conviction and confidence in yourself to make it happen.

Be Fearless – Show The World Who You Are And What You Want.

It’s not easy to put yourself out there in a big way, show the world who you are and announce what you want. But you must dare to be vulnerable. Sharing your goals with others increases the likelihood that you’ll follow through. Keep in mind that change is often uncomfortable, not only for you but those around you as well so be ready for criticism and opinions that may not fit with your vision. Get out of your comfort zone, stretch yourself. Don’t do what feels good (that’s easy), do what feels right in your gut. Follow you instincts, stay connected to who you are, stay open and flexible.

Be Zealous – Make Yourself Your Mission and Commit to Living a Big Juicy Life.

As women, we have a tendency to put ourselves last on the list, if we’re on the list at all. But to design the delicious life that you covet, it’s essential you have the chutzpah to put your needs first. So go ahead, say “no” to things that aren’t supporting your priorities. Be tenacious. Do whatever it takes to get what you want. Also remember that this is YOUR CHOICE, it’s up to you. You deserve it.

Be Smart – Get Support.

The most successful and courageous people in the world likely have a big support network around them. I bet that most, if not all, of the experts in this magazine work with coaches, mentors and visionaries. You already took the first step by reading SoulWomen and joining the SoulWoman Sanctuary. But don’t stop there! Seek out your own mentor or coach for guidance and cheerleading.

You have what it takes to BE COURAGEOUS. I believe in you. Go for it and keep me posted about your journey!

xoxo,

There are a lot of different elements that go into starting and maintaining a successful business.

But I want a Happy Business!

What’s a Happy Business?

Let’s start with what a Happy Business is NOT! It’s not overwhelming. It’s not struggling or fumbling. It’s not disorganized. It doesn’t make you want to pull your hair out. Uncertainty is not an issue. It’s not all over the place.

So what IS a Happy Business?

A Happy Business has a positive energy all its own that propels it to new heights regularly. It’s strong and balanced in various areas. It’s a relatively smooth ride. Of course that doesn’t mean there aren’t bumps in the road. But, it’s a fun adventure.

So what do you need to have a HAPPY BUSINESS?

Of course you need the Clientele that brings in the cash.

But what about …

- Confidence

You must be Confident in what you’re doing to be successful. It’s just not going to happen otherwise. When I first became a coach I was confident in my coaching abilities but it took me along time to realize that my calling and passion are around creating my own happiness and success and showing other women how they can do the same. Until I had that a-ha moment and armed myself with all the knowledge and research I could, I didn’t feel confident launching my business. Finding the right niche was key. In addition to knowing your stuff, focusing on past successes can also help give your confidence level a boost.

- Passion and Vision

It’s imperative, but not always easy, to maintain your initial passion and vision as your business develops, changes and grows. You can’t let daily, sometimes mundane, tasks, chip away at it. Remember your big picture desire for your business and keep in mind how you’re serving the world through what you’re offering. If this is a challenge for you post your mission statement on your computer or create a vision board to hang in your office.

- Productivity and Motivation

Another hurdle for many entrepreneurs is productivity and motivation. With so many distractions – for me lately it’s been my new kitten! – it can be tough to stay on track as much as we would like. Having systems and rules in place can really make a difference. I use time chunking (30 minute blocks dedicated to one task only) for important to-dos and try to check emails only a few times a day.

- Organization

There are so many methods for organizing your office, organizing your day, organizing your projects that I can’t possibly go into them here. But obviously an organized business is a prerequisite for a happy business. Personally, I’m a list maker, a skill I learned from my mother. In fact, “The List,” is a running joke between me and my sister (The List of fun things we want to do on our vacation together, The List of holiday shopping we have to do, everything gets a List.) It doesn’t matter what works for you, as long as you find the method that does.

- Delegation

Many entrepreneurs have a big problem delegating and letting go of things, which is understandable. Their business is like their baby after all. And if you’re also a perfectionist it can be even more difficult. But you can’t do everything yourself forever and build a successul and happy business. It’s impossible. Luckily for me, I began delegating and supervising others back during my days as the flag captain of the (winning!) high school marching band, skills I honed during my 20 year career in public relations and event planning. If this is new for you start by considering what administrative tasks you can delegate to a virtual assistant. If you’re still doubtful consider the value of your time and whether or not it makes sense to program your newsletter yourself or spend that same time on income generating activities.

- Work-Life Balance

This is a huge dilema for so many entrepreneurs. There’s so much to do we wish we had 36 hour days. But if you don’t have a well-rounded life, it’s hard to be happy. And you know how important I believe that is! Clients and partners are attracted to happy people so make it work for you! Taking time off to spend with your family and friends is key to keeping you focused. Self-care in the form of a massage, workout or meditation class also delivers massive payoff. And a few days away can be just what you need to recharge and get the creative juices flowing.

- Your Team

Who’s on your team? Do you have a support system? Are your vendors easy to work with and providing with the services that you need? Even if you’re a solopreneur or not yet at the point where you can staff, building a supportive team — even including suppliers, confidants you can bounce ideas off of and networking communities — is crucial to success.

So how HAPPY is YOUR BUSINESS? What aspects are the most challenging for you? Where do you excel?

I’d love for you to share!

Are you hopeful?

A dear friend of mine recently proclaimed that playing Yahtzee, the classic family dice game much like poker, made him feel more hopeful about the future.

Wow. I was intrigued. It made me start thinking about hope. And I wanted to understand how such a simple act could carry such power for him.

He explained that when he needs a six to complete a large straight, two fours to get a full house, or is going for the Holy Grail – a YAHTZEE (five of a kind) - it can really seem impossible.

But when he rolls what he needs to get that score, it reminds him that what may seem impossible and unattainable is in fact quite achievable. It makes him more HOPEFUL.

What a great outlook! Who would have thought that playing a simple, classic game could instill hope. Such an easy way to remind yourself that your dreams and goals are in fact … doable.

Hope can be a powerful tool to help propel us forward to achieve our goals. Entrepreneurs must have hope to even get their businesses off the ground.

Worry however can quickly set in. Worry about money. Worry about clients. Worry about time.

But by holding onto and cultivating hope, you can actually diminish the worry.

Cultivate hope by committing to your goals, practicing gratitude, choosing to focus on positive thoughts about your business, surrounding yourself with hopeful, successful people, and trusting the universe.

And by determining what your YAHTZEE is. What activity makes you feel hopeful and powerful?

What business or life possibilities might open up to you with more hope? What would be unleashed if you stopped worrying about money?

Please share below.

It was heavenly.

This time of year, New York City is transformed into a sparkling oasis, as 5th Avenue, Park Avenue, Lincoln Center and many other popular destinations are aglow for the holidays in lavish decorations.

Tourists flock to Rockefeller Center to see the nation’s largest Christmas Tree while lovers and families with small children glide across the ice skating rink at Bryant Park.

Charming markets pop up around town, offering an array of trinkets, winter wear and more for the shoppers sipping hot chocolate. And locals on their way to work breathe in the fragrant aroma of evergreen trees, awaiting their new homes, lined up on sidewalks throughout the city.

Famous for its intense energy all year round, the city that never sleeps takes on a very special and completely different vibe from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve.

A few days after that first sweet smell of the season, as I watched workers on cherry-pickers stringing glittering white lights on the trees around Columbus Circle, I started wondering how we could capture this amazing fresh and exciting feeling and utilize it to boost our spirits and captivate potential clients throughout the year.

You see, when we are dressed up in our finest — glimmering like a glorious Christmas tree, or wrapped up like a lovely Hanukkah gift – others are attracted to our brilliance.

And when others are attracted to you, when they want to bask in your brightness and positivity, and even hope some of it rubs off on them, you won’t have to look for clients or friends. They will flock to you.

So this holiday season, why not take a moment to reflect on how you can be your best sparkly self all year long?

Here are a few things you can try…

Practice better self-care so you’re operating at your peak performance (exercise regularly, eat healthy whole foods).

Look your best even if you’re working at home (don only outfits that make you feel fabulous, get a great haircut or try a new color).

And discover what you need to do to nourish your soul (it’s out there, and you can do it!)

Implemented on a regular basis, actions like these can put a festive twinkle in your eyes and help you radiate confidence and warmth, traits that will surely not only up your happiness quotient but also boost your biz at the same time.

How are you going to keep the shine going all year long? Let me know!

xoxo

Gratitude.

November is obviously that time of year when everybody in the U.S. is talking about it. One of the few universal traditions at Thanksgiving Dinner is to go around the table and say what you’re grateful for.

But what’s the big deal? And should you be thinking all year long?

My former self was not grateful for much. I had my fair share of hard knocks but overall I had a pretty good life. I thought that’s how it was suppose to be. That was “normal.” And as a result, I took it for granted. I wasn’t very grateful. And anticipating that Thanksgiving moment caused anxiety.

Enter the concept of G-R-A-T-I-T-U-D-E.

Buddhists are grateful that they have a “precious human life” which provides the perfect conditions in which to strive to become enlightened (which is basically evolving into the kindest, most compassionate and loving person possible). And to take it further, Buddhists in so-called advanced societies like America are grateful to be in their specific “precious human life.” That’s because our concept of personal suffering doesn’t typically include finding access to the basic human needs of clean water, food and shelter in an oppressive war-torn environment.

On a recent episode of “The Amazing Race, “a contestant witnessing the everyday strife of life in India put it something like this … the next time you’re sitting on your cushy sofa in front of your giant flat screen TV complaining about your cable reception, well just don’t.

Wow…when you think about it that way perhaps we all have A LOT to be grateful for!

But can being more grateful really have an impact on your life and your business?

The benefits of gratitude are surprising. A look at more than 40 studies on gratitude will have you rushing to start a practice today. The results show people who participate in a gratitude practice regularly, are HAPPIER, HEALTHIER, better MANAGERS, are more PRODUCTIVE, better DECISION-MAKERS, better at NETWORKING, have better CAREERS, better FRIENDSHIPS and MARRIAGES , are more LIKABLE, more OPTIMISTIC, more SPIRITUAL, and less MATERIALISTIC. And that’s not even all the benefits!

How can you Practice Gratitude?

It’s not difficult to add a Gratitude Practice into your routine. It can be as simple as ending your day by thinking about five things you are grateful for before going to sleep. Or keeping a gratitude journal and writing an entry or two each day. Another idea comes from Liz Gilbert, author of the fabulous Eat, Pray, Love. SHE started a Happiness Jar. She records a happy moment from each day on a slip of paper and puts it a jar she’s decorated and labeled her Happiness Jar. When the jar is full she has a jar of Happiness (very similar to Gratitude and a fun idea!)

There are many other ways you can practice gratitude. You can also write letters of gratitude and send them to the people who have had impact on you. You can speak gratitude in person. You can make a gratitude date and discuss what you’re grateful for with a partner.

For any of these activities to provide meaningful results, you need to do a few more things ….

1) Commit to doing it regularly,

2) Schedule it at a set time everyday – upon awaking, before dinner, before bed,

3) Feel your gratitude – really think about it,

4) Keep it up, don’t stop once you start seeing results,

5) Allow yourself to be human. If you miss a day, or two, or three, just get back to it. If you’re having a really bad day and can’t think of anything you’re grateful for, be grateful for your breath (as Oprah says). You are still alive. Or the cup of coffee you’re drinking. Or that tomorrow is another day. Think of something.

I no longer fear being put on the spot at the Thanksgiving table. I know I’m already grateful for the gathering itself which I’ll share with amazing friends in the Catskills. Around a large table filled with a bounty of delicious foods, and a fire blazing in the fireplace of the great room, I will share that I am grateful for my life.

How do you practice gratitude? I’d love to hear about it below.

xoxo,

Last week, Hurricane Sandy demolished the state where I live and shut down the city I work in for days. Both are still fighting to recover and will be for some time.

The week was emotionally and physically draining. But I was lucky. The worst part for me was losing power for almost 3 days. I live alone but am blessed that dear friends also live in my building. We regularly gather for cherished dinners, cocktails, chatting, celebrations and more. And, we were together Monday night as Sandy bore down on the New York City area. My friend Linda made pasta and we had plenty of wine. When the lights went out around 10pm we broke out the champagne.

By the following day the power outage was already getting old. With limited access to the internet (we had to save our charged up battery to recharge our precious cell phones from our computers) and only an old fashioned transistor radio, we weren’t privy to the images of carnage the rest of the world saw. And we had no idea how long it would be before power was restored.

A friend, who was stuck in Europe due to the storm, offered me her apartment in Manhattan, with power. I couldn’t get there with mass transit shut down but Linda offered to drive me in so on Tuesday evening we ventured to the Upper West Side. Most businesses where closed but some restaurants and delis were open so we had dinner and I retreated, feeling a little guilty to my building mates, to the luxury high rise with power.

Comfortable but isolated, I stayed in Manhattan alone. I wondered if friends, unable to communicate, were ok. I finally watched the news coverage on TV and tried to comprehend the devastation … and that the devastation wasn’t in some other town across the country, but here, where I live.

I tried to focus and tried to work but I didn’t get much accomplished. I texted my friends still in the darkness in New Jersey and lower Manhattan. Mostly via text, I heard their personal tales of survival – a friend’s sister survived six trees falling on her house, a friend’s mother-in-law was found safe in Long Beach days later (where they’re still shoveling sand out of their homes, cars and streets), another still doesn’t have power, another won’t be able to return to her beach house for six months, and an entrepreneur friend described his office at the South Street Seaport as a fish bowl. We were all the lucky ones.

I fell asleep early on the couch. I ate Doritos for dinner. Yep, that’s what I did. I was emotionally exhausted and drained. So I gave myself some space. I gave myself time. I gave myself permission to feel what I was feeling … scared, isolated, alone, uncertain. . Three days later the electricity in my town was restored so I went home on Thursday night.

Friday night we gathered again at Linda’s apartment upstairs, enjoying each other’s company as well as cocktails and a smorgasbord of perishable yummies bought pre-storm to eat up before they spoiled. Needing more fun to reset my post-Sandy mood, I ventured into the newly electrified neighborhood of Chelsea for lunch and movie yesterday. Yet I found it eerily quiet.

Now it’s Sunday and I’m trying to get back to my normal routine. I realize that giving myself the time, space and permission to feel my feelings was the only thing I could do last week to get through the uncertainty.

When you’re facing challenging times, remember to allow yourself to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. Cut yourself some slack. Be gentle with yourself. And allow yourself a little time to get back to operating at your regular capacity.

What areas of your life and business are calling out for a little nurturing?

Where are you not letting yourself feel your feelings?

And how is this holding you back?

A single neon red tree glowing in the sunshine. A rainbow of fallen leaves against the still green grass. The reflection of the colorful tree line sparkling on the lake. Glorious.

I was fortunate enough to get away recently for a weekend in the country – the Catskills to be specific. Not only was I blessed to spend quality time with dear friends, but I got to revel in the bounty of the season.

Upstate New York is ablaze in a gorgeous array of golds, reds, pinks, browns and greens. It truly was spectacular to see. And like a sponge, I soaked it all up.

As Fall marks the change of season, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on changes you could make in your life or your business. Entrepreneurs must be adaptable and expect change. The most successful will even embrace change as their businesses evolve and grow.

Of course many people say they don’t like change … but it’s one of the only constants in this wonderful and crazy thing we call life.

While change can bring up fear, self doubt, resistance and anxiety, change can also be exciting and present new possibilities. Possibilities to discover more deeply who you are, what’s important to you, what you want and how you can better serve others.

Are you showing your true colors?

Are you fully embracing who you are and showing up in your life and your business? Open to all the possibilities the universe has to offer?

When self doubt creeps in, it can take you down a road to nowhere and hinder your progress. Stomp it out by revisiting your past successes. Then, remember why you’re doing what you’re doing. That will surely get you fired up and restore your confidence.

I hope you’ll share your stories below about how you’re showing your true colors and what helps you keep your palette full.

“Coaching with Elaine is like having your life revealed to you in a striking new way. I’m amazed by how clearly she can sense and articulate the truth. And how she inspires a fresh way of looking at the world. Before working with her, I felt submerged in a world of chaos, bitterness and self-doubting. Elaine brings not only a toolbox of different techniques and a profound experience of corporate business to her coaching practice; she also and most importantly is looking for the transformational agenda of her clients. She can articulate an action plan even with chaotic people like me – and yet sense behind it what is really waiting to emerge next. If you have the chance to work with her, grab it. Your life won’t be the same.”
